JOHN HEARD 1945–2017

Actor John Heard, who was found dead on July 21 in Palo Alto, California, a few days after minor back surgery, is known to millions only as Macaulay Culkin’s panicked dad in 1990’s Home Alone and its sequel. But 71-yearold Heard was “one of the best actors of his generation,” said Bette Midler, his co-star in Beaches (1988). Heard won praise for many film and TV roles, including Big (1988) and The Sopranos. Yet the Washington, DC, native admitted that he didn’t handle stardom well and his troubled personal life included problems with alcohol and three marriages. Maxwell, his son with his second wife, Sharon, died last year at age 22. Said his Home Alone co-star Daniel Stern. “He lived it hard, fast and fearlessly.”
