Originally owned by the family of publishing magnate Malcolm Forbes, the private island of Laucala, accessible only by private plane, was purchased by Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2003. The Austrian billionaire transformed the 3,500-acre property into a posh paradise, perfect for an A-list clientele like Oprah Winfrey and Miranda Kerr. The resort’s 25 luxury villas range from US$4,800 to US$45,000 per night, and each comes with its own pool, chauffeur and unlimited food and drink at any of the island’s five restaurants. “There are no limits,” says general manager Petra Trapp. “It’s important that we wow our guests, like surprising them with a spa night or dinner under the stars with a private chef.” The resort also boasts a fleet of boats, jet skis and a submarine worth $2 million!

Since Laucala is only accessible via private plane, the resort is paparazzo-proof. Celeb guests: Ludacris (left), with wife Eudoxie. The Plateau Villa’s open-air design plan boasts divine island and ocean views.

The two-bedroom over-water villa starts at US$8,800 per night and features a private pool carved into the rocks of the shore.
