WHO - - The List - HOSTED BY: Steve Pennells

Back in 1988, a new weeknight soap started. The more experienced cast members were just happy they could look forward to a few weeks’ employment. Three decades later, one of them, Ray Meagher, who plays Alf Stewart, the phrase-coining, straight-shooting heart of the soap, is still collecting his pay cheque. As he tells Pennells in this commemorative special, he hopes they let Alf literally sail off into the sunset when it comes his time to go. Other past members of the cast reminisce, including the show’s first sweethearts, Frank and Bobby (aka Alex Papps and Nicolle Dickson), and those who went on to international fame, like Melissa George and Dannii Minogue, who is not averse to her H&A character, bad girl Emma Jackson, making a return. “I’m very interested,” she confesses. And why wouldn’t you be? As Alf says of Summer Bay, “Best flamin’ place in the world.” (Airs Tues., July 17, 7.30 PM; Seven)

Welcome to Summer Bay: the cast in 1988.

“Thanks for that, it makes me feel about 900, Steve,” says Meagher when Pennells tells him many of the current cast weren’t born when the show started.
