Meet AARON GLENANE
The future looks bright for this on-the-rise Australian actor
He’s acted alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford and Toni Collette, but Aaron Glenane once had a different career in mind. “I was so set on playing basketball,” the 32-year-old from Ballarat, Victoria, says. “I only found acting when my mum convinced me I’d have to do interviews after the games, so I should know how to talk to people.”
Soon enough, he fell in love with performing and has notched up a string of TV and film appearances, including in six-part drama Mr Inbetween (starts Mon., Oct. 1 at 8.30pm on Showcase). “I play a guy called Matt, a small-time drug dealer who isn’t ready for what’s in store,” Glenane says.
Given his career trajectory, which began with a role in local film The Black Balloon, has taken in TV projects Puberty Blues, Deadline Gallipoli and Molly, and sees him appearing in the Rachel Griffiths–directed movie Ride Like a Girl in 2019, he was one of 10 finalists for this year’s Heath Ledger Scholarship. Although the prize was won by actress Charmaine Bingwa, Glenane says, “It is a massive honour to have been considered.”
In the meantime, Glenane is focusing on broadening his horizons, always on the lookout for characters with depth and complexity. “I am not a rom-com kind of guy, even though my sister hates that about me,” he says. “I like really dark and mysterious characters that challenge me.”
