60 YEARS OF AACTAS GLAMOUR
Looking back on the stand-out styles from the AACTA red carpet
It’s Australia’s version of the Oscars, and this year marks the 60th anniversary of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards. Over the years the AACTA red carpet has produced some of Australia’s most memorable looks, launching actresses’ careers and cementing fashion trends of the time. From skin-tight latex to head-to-toe yellow or feminine lace, local A-listers – alongside their stylists – choose the AACTAS red carpet to take their biggest fashion risks. Elizabeth Stewart spoke of their experience creating a red-carpet look, noting that it can take up to 300 hours for an atelier to create a bespoke piece for Blanchett to wear. “I wish you all could see the hours of work and artistry that go into making a brilliant idea,” she posted to Instagram.
Many of our home-grown stars use stylists to find the perfect red-carpet dress, but some, including Isla Fisher, prefer to go solo.
“I’m not working with a stylist right now. So I chose it myself,” she told WHO of her 2018 AACTA red-carpet look. “I think stylists are wonderful,” she continued, “[ but] when things come up at the last minute and you’re in a rush, sometimes you just pull a dress.”
The actress has long been a fan of creating her own look, telling told UK Marie Claire in 2010: “I’ve always loved fashion. That’s why I don’t use a stylist... it’s such an expression of self.”
