It is March 1918 and for the worn-out troops in the trenches, there are rumours of a last-ditch German offensive. Opposing them on the frontline is British C company with the stiff-upper-lipped Lt Osborne (Bettany) leading by example, but their captain, Stanhope (Sam Claflin), is losing his mind. Like a kettle boiling, for most of the film not much happens other than a faint, disquieting rumble as the pressure builds. The ending is all-out ugly. (Out now)
