‘I’M JUST NOT BOTHERED’

Catherine Tate reveals why she hates planning tours and doesn’t read reviews

-

The original series of The Catherine Tate Show aired over a decade ago, but the characters and catchphrases created by the English comedian, 50, are as popular as ever. Tate talks to WHO about her first Australian tour, which kicks off on Sat., Nov. 10 in Perth. What prompted you to put your show on stage? It was always on my agenda, but the time was just never right. I’m a bit of a commitment-phobe and you have to commit so far down the line to secure venues and I thought, “Oh, I don’t want to do that.” I don’t know what made me finally say, “OK, let’s just book it,” and when the time came, I thought, “God, why I am I doing this?” and of course I absolutely loved it. I didn’t want to stop. How do you feel around review time? It’s probably self-preservation, but I don’t have the curiosity gene in me. I don’t seek to find out what people say about me, good or bad. I don’t read reviews, I don’t read anything about me. I’m genuinely not interested.

You ain’t bovvered!

I ain’t bovvered either way, luv! It works as a catchphrase and a rule for life. Someone said to me earlier, why aren’t you on social media, and my genuine answer is I can’t be bothered. It seems like a lot of hard work. It’s just not for me – I don’t think I’d be very good at it.

What Australian comedy do you like?

I used to have an Australian physiotherapist who gave me a DVD of The Castle about 10 years ago, and still, me and my friends will go to Starbucks and say, “How much is a frappuccino? Three pounds sixty? Tell him he’s dreaming!” We do it to everything. Also, Kath & Kim. I’ve only just been introduced to Prue and Trude. I love it, I love it, love it. It’s so good.
