TIMELINE OF A TRAGEDY
Two brothers linked in life – and death
FAMILY BUSINESS
Keith Caneiro (left, in 2001) employed his brother Paul at Square One, a tech start-up, and Ecostar Pest Management, a pestcontrol firm housed in the same office.
UP IN SMOKE
On Nov. 20 Keith and Jennifer Caneiro’s mansion on Willow Brook Road in Colts Neck, New Jersey, was gutted by a slow-burning fire police believe was set in the basement at around 4am, after the family of four were murdered. “It’s truly the definition of horror,” says family friend Connie Thanasoulis.
A SECOND BLAZE
Authorities allege that after killing his brother, sisterin-law, niece and nephew, Paul set fire to his own home, hoping police would think the Caneiros were being targeted by criminals with mafia ties. “We have no reason to believe there’s any aspect of organised crime involved,” says prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni.
SHOCK & HEARTBREAK
Hundreds gathered in Colts Neck on Nov. 21 to grieve the slain family of four. “It’s a very dark, unimaginable tragedy,” says Chris Durkin, pastor of the Community Church, who led the vigil. “The community is aching.”
A BROTHER ACCUSED
Paul (in a Nov. 21 mugshot) denies he had anything to do with the murders of Keith and his family or the fires at both the Caneiro homes.
