Before I received my DNA results, I was a bit worried. What would it tell me? Similar to an ancestry test, the EasyDNA NutriFit Premium test provides 32 pages of information about your genetic tolerance to, and natural levels of, various macro and micro nutrients, as well as factors such as whether you have the ‘fat blasting’ or ‘obesity’ genes (turns out I have neither). The idea of the test is to give you a better idea of how to train, eat and live, according to your genetic makeup. The report is extremely detailed and reveals how well you’re likely to age, according to your skin, and includes how well you detoxify stress, plus whether you have a tendency towards worrying (turns out I do!). The test showed me I have naturally high levels of B12 and a rare gene that gives me a 7 per cent higher-than-average bone density. Good news! But more than just an interesting insight, the results can steer you towards foods and lifestyle habits that will benefit your health – in my case, eat more omega-3 fatty acids. I have a favourable response to monounsaturated fats, so including more of it will deliver great benefits. My genes also make me less likely to reach for something sweet and I’m more likely to taste bitter foods more intensely. As you can tell, the results are detailed and fascinating. So, what to do with all that knowledge? For me, most of it was validation, but there were surprises. My DNA points to me as having a high risk of alcohol addiction, but when it comes to nicotine (a separate gene marker), I figure much lower on the risk scale. Truth is, I’ve never been addicted to either. So despite our DNA, it’s possible there may be other factors at play. Overall, I found the NutriFit test to be eye-opening and perfect for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of their health. The results are extremely insightful and helpful when it comes to making food and exercise choices, and I feel a lot better knowing more about my genetic functioning.
