American TV star Sarah Hyland couldn’t have guessed a simple flirtation on Twitter in 2016 would lead to finding the love of her life, but just like a scene out of a movie, Hyland fell for her now fiancé and former US Bachelorette contestant Wells Adams. Within a week of dating Adams in September 2017, she experienced health problems and underwent her second kidney transplant for kidney dysplasia – she had her first in 2012. As her health battle continued, Hyland told WHO she felt lucky to have boyfriend Adams by her side.

“I lean on my boyfriend,” Hyland tells WHO. “It definitely set a tone of ‘This is my life’. If you can handle the fire, great. If you can’t, goodbye,” she continues.

Asked how the dynamic of their relationship has played out over the past few years, Hyland says, “We kind of did a trial by fire.” In fact, “Our very first date was the night before the Emmys party [in September 2017],” says Hyland. “I just threw him in a room of really big people, and he handled it like a champ. Then another trial by fire, like, ‘Hey, I just had a lifesaving surgery, will you fly to LA and come over and hang out at my house and make me tacos? Thanks.’ ”

The former Nashville DJ has continued to support Hyland as she faces ongoing health issues. As she made a steady recovery, the two found themselves getting closer and closer.

So much so, they decided to take the plunge and move in together in August last year, when Adams officially moved to Los Angeles.

The couple have a lot in common, especially their love of pooches – which Adams says was a talking point before they moved in together. “The big concern was I have a big dog and she has two dogs and how that was going to work out,” he tells WHO. Luckily, their precious pets get along. “Everything’s kind of settled down.”

In fact, their whole relationship has been “really weirdly normal”, Adams tells WHO. “That question gets asked a lot because you expect the answer to be like, ‘It’s crazy because it’s in the spotlight’, but for whatever reason, it’s been really nice and normal and wonderful.” A sentiment Hyland agrees with. Moving in together “brought us closer”, she adds.

In the past, Adams has fiercely defended his girlfriend against online trolls, clapping back at negative comments about her

shrinking weight. In October 2018, a commenter wrote, “Eat a doughnut”, to which Adams replied, “Eat s---.” On another occasion, Adams verified that Hyland was not starving herself despite the harsh comments from social-media followers. “Just saw Sarah’s story. Apparently, there are concerns about how much bread she eats. I can vouch for her that she truly is – she’s not a carnivore, she’s a carbivore,” he said. All qualities which could make for a well-rounded husband.

Since they started dating, the pair have documented many holidays, but on July 17 their vacation shots were special: Adams finally got down on bended knee and asked Hyland to marry him. In photos and videos posted on their social media accounts, an excited Hyland is seen at the beach, gasping for air and almost shouting, “Yes!” before kissing her husbandto-be. “That can’t eat, can’t sleep, reach for the stars, over the fence, world series kind of stuff @wellsadams,” she captioned the heartfelt moment. Meanwhile, Adams responded with a reference to Johnny Cash and June Carter, with lyrics attributed to country band Drew Holcolm & The Neighbors: “I’ll be Johnny, you be June. But forever.” Forever, indeed.
