Sally Hulse, 35, from Elwood, Vic, is like many mums who find they’re suddenly not in a body that makes them feel good. But it’s not just about looks. Hulse’s biggest concern was how she felt – horrible. Hulse was avoiding the camera and even her husband. “I noticed a drastic drop in my mood. I hated getting dressed and didn’t want my photo taken. If I saw a photo of myself, I’d get even more depressed at what I had let myself become. I distanced myself from my husband physically, because I felt so disgusting. I just felt heavy – in every sense of the word. Physically, mentally, emotionally. I didn’t feel like me.”

With her daughter having just turned 1 and Hulse about to go back to work, she jumped on Jess Sepel’s app as it had helped her get into shape for her wedding just over a year earlier. Having JSHealth guide her to new habits was ground breaking. “I’ve learnt so much about nutrition and self-care. For example, I never knew what ‘nutrient-dense’ foods were before this.” She realised that was why she always felt hungry after she’d eaten. “The food I was eating wasn’t nutrient dense. My body was still craving those nutrients, vitamins and minerals, so I was still getting hungry signals.”

Once she began eating wholefoods everything changed. “I saw and felt the difference immediately. I could eat half the amount of food and feel completely satisfied.” Having nutrition knowledge has been key because even though Hulse works out regularly, it’s still a struggle for her. “There just never seems to be enough hours in the day. Especially with a 2-year-old. So I just do what I can, when I can, and I don’t punish myself or guilt myself about that.”

What keeps her going is the simplicity of the program and the daily motivation from the JS Health community. “For me, it’s knowing that I feel at my absolute best when I’m living this life. I know how I will feel if I slip into bad habits – I know exactly what that will feel like. And I don’t want that for myself. I’m happiest and healthiest when I’m nourishing my body properly and consistently.”

I don’t want her to have a distorted view of her body and her diet as she gets older.” Sally Hulse admits to feeling “heavy – in every sense of the word” before she started her weight-loss journey.
