On July 31, Mariah Carey celebrated the 25th anniversary of Camp Mariah – the career-awareness American summer camp she sponsors through The Fresh

Air Fund – by visiting the site of the nonprofit in Fishkill, New York, with Monroe and Moroccan, her 8-year-old twins with ex Nick Cannon.

You started Camp Mariah 25 years ago. What does it mean to you?

This place hasn’t changed that much from when I first started with the camp. It’s very nostalgic talking to the kids themselves. Some of the kids who had been here years ago now are back as counsellors, working with the other kids. They are so genuine about what this camp has done for them, in terms of their experiences and the people that they are today.

Speaking of nostalgia, you filmed your 1996 music video for ‘Always Be My Baby’ at the camp!

We did. There was a little boy and a little girl in love – they snuck out and went swimming. I directed it, but I don’t think I even took credit for it back then.

What were summers like for you as a child? I moved around a lot. I went to one camp that I hated. I try to make the best of whatever situation I’m in, and sometimes

I had a lot of fun, sometimes I didn’t. Christmas is my favourite time of year anyway.

Your kids looked like they had so much fun at the camp. How do you keep up with those two?

They’re a lot, but they give me so much love in return. I wouldn’t be the same person without them. I think Nick and I have done pretty well in co-parenting – staying friends with each other so that we can talk.

They have a very different childhood than you did. How does that inform your parenting?

It’s hard, but I try to keep them grounded so they don’t think everything is just handed to them. Right now it’s like, “I want this,” and I’m like, “You’re asking me for something that costs $20. I can’t even imagine having, like, one dollar as a kid because we didn’t have money going around.” So they have to appreciate those things.

Work-wise, what’s next?

I’m working on my memoir now – it’s been very therapeutic. I have a concept for my next album that I’m really excited about. And it’s the 25th anniversary of my Christmas album this year too, so we’re putting together something special.
