Unnamed victim reveals her identity

SHE HAS WRITTEN HER ACCOUNT OF THE SHOCKING CAMPUS ASSAULT BY BROCK TURNER

THE PREVIOUSLY UNNAMED woman sexually assaulted by American college student Brock Turner has revealed her identity ahead of the release of her memoir. Chanel Miller, known as Emily Doe during Turner’s trial, will release Know My Name at the end of the month, and in the book writes about the brutal January 2015 attack, its aftermath and her recovery.

In her research, the 27-year-old writer and artist from San Francisco, California, gained access to court documents and witness statements she’d not seen during the trial. Miller’s 7000-word victim impact statement was read at Turner’s sentencing in 2016, and later viewed by millions when it was published online.

In it, Miller wrote about how she’d learnt details of her sexual assault by reading newspaper reports. She described how she felt compelled to “relearn my real name, my real identity” after being repeatedly referred to as an “unconscious, intoxicated woman”.

In January 2015, the Stanford University swimming star attacked Miller while she lay unconscious outside an on-campus fraternity house, beside a dumpster. Turner was caught assaulting Miller by other students who restrained him while the police were called.

There was widespread outrage at his eventual six-month sentence, of which he served just three months, and a comment at the time by Turner’s father who stated his son had “paid a steep price for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years”.

The California judge who presided over the case was later removed from office and Turner remains a convicted sex offender. Miller’s book is released in Australia on Sep. 24.
