WHEN THE NEWS BROKE IN JULY 2012 that Kristen Stewart had cheated on Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson, the hearts of Twilight fans shattered everywhere. Dating since 2009, the on and off-screen romance quickly turned the young actors into a high-profile power couple until, three years into their relationship, Stewart was linked to Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. Now 29-year-old Stewart has opened up what she calls “a really hard period of my life”. “I was really young,” she said on The Howard Stern Show on November 5. “I didn’t really know how to deal with that. I made some mistakes,” she says.
In the interview, Stewart also admitted she would have married Pattinson when they were together. Stern pressed Stewart, who is currently dating screenwriter Dylan Meyer, on her relationship with Pattinson, asking whether marriage was something she’d considered. She replied she “wanted to”, saying “every relationship I’ve ever been in, I thought that was it”. Speaking about Pattinson, she added, “We were together for years, that was my first [love].”
When rumours of Stewart’s infidelity spread like wildfire, both Stewart and Sanders, a married father-of-two, were forced to release statements. “I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment
I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardised the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry,” Stewart said at the time.
But when pictures were leaked of Stewart and Sanders kissing on a Los Angeles street, the writing was on the wall for Stewart and Pattinson, who was photographed leaving the home he shared with Stewart with his belongings in garbage bags a few months later.
Now, Stewart, who stars in the reboot of Charlie’s Angels, has clarified that her relationship with Sanders was not sexual. “I did not f--k him,” she said in the candid interview.
Opening up, Stewart spoke frankly about the ‘cheating’ scandal, claiming she was ‘slut-shamed’ and the highly-publicised scandal impacted her ability to get work afterwards. Stewart , who has previously dated model Stella Maxwell and stylist Sara Dinkin, is happily in love with Meyer.
Asked by Stern whether she would pop the question to Meyer, Stewart quipped, “absolutely”. •
