KANYE FOR PRESIDENT
West’s sights are set on the West Wing
Rapper, fashion designer and Sunday Service leader Kanye West has announced his next ambition. “We must now realise the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,” he declared on Twitter. “I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.” His July 4 announcement, which came days after teasing a new song and a new album titled God’s Country, was met with mixed reactions. “You have my full support!” responded billionaire Elon Musk. “Too much foolishness today. #SitAllTheWayDown,” tweeted actress Octavia Spencer. “It’s obvious that some people live in a bubble. It’s about time to burst it.”
His wife of six years Kim Kardashian merely reposted his message with the addition of an American flag emoji.
West, 43, first announced he wanted to run for office during his 2015 Video Vanguard Award acceptance at the MTV Video Music Awards.
A year later, Kardashian, 39, told Wonderland magazine she was worried about how her past could be weaponised. “Look at all the awful things they’re doing to Melania [Trump], putting up the naked photos [of her],” she said, referring to the semi-nude photo shoot the First Lady did for British
GQ back in 2000, which resurfaced in 2016. “I’ll say to Kanye: ‘Babe, you know the kind of photos they’d put up of me!’.”
The 21-time Grammy winner also dipped his toe into the political ring when he controversially showed his support for President Trump, which Kardashian defended on Twitter in April 2018.
“He’s a free thinker, is that not allowed in America?” she wrote. “Now when he spoke out about Trump ... Most people (including myself ) have very different feelings & opinions about this. But this is HIS opinion. I believe in people being able to have their own opinions, even if really different from mine … He never said he agrees with his politics.”
With the election only four months away, West still needs to register with the Federal Election Commission, present a campaign platform, collect enough signatures to get on the November ballot and more. He has already missed the deadline to file as an independent candidate in many states.
However things pan out, a source tells Us Weekly that Kardashian will stand by her man. “Kanye has been planning this for years and Kim has known about his aspirations and has been supportive,” the insider shared. “Kanye is passionate about arts and education and wants to support in any way he can.”
