THE PRIVATE STAR AND HER HUSBAND FINALLY CONFIRM PREGNANCY RUMOURS BY ADMITTING THEY’VE ALREADY WELCOMED THEIR SON
She’s notoriously private when it comes to her personal life, so it wasn’t a big surprise when Scarlett Johansson kept mum when rumours surfaced she was pregnant. But the star’s husband Colin Jost managed to shock fans when he not only confirmed the couple had a little one on the way, but that the actress had already delivered their son!
“OK, OK we had a baby,” the Saturday Night Live funnyman, 39, confirmed on Instagram on August 18. “His name is Cosmo. We love him very much,” the proud new dad added.
The announcement came less than a week after the comedian let the cat out of the bag by shouting, “We’re having a baby, it’s exciting,” during a stand-up gig at the Ridgefield Playhouse in Connecticut.
Rumours about the Marvel star’s potential pregnancy first started swirling when she missed several events to promote her new flick Black Widow in July. Instead, the actress opted to appear for interviews via Zoom, where she conspicuously only showed herself from the shoulders up.
“[Scarlett] hasn’t been doing many interviews or events to promote Black Widow, which is surprising since it’s a huge Marvel/Disney release and she is both the star and an executive producer,” a source told Page Six at the time. “Scarlett is pregnant but has been keeping it very quiet. She has been keeping a very low profile.”
The low-key couple tied the knot in a simple ceremony at their New York home in October 2020. While their baby boy is their first child together, Jost has already got fatherhood down pat from being a hands-on stepdad to Rose Dorothy, 6 – whom Johansson, 36, shares with her ex-husband, Romain Dauriac, 39.
Jost has been a “great father figure for Rose”, a source told Us Weekly magazine before the pair wed. “He loves playing with her and she is obsessed with him.”
His son’s arrival was a dream come true for Jost, who has been very open about his desire to start a family. “It’s strange because a switch kind of flipped for me – I don’t know – a year or two ago or something. It’s definitely on my mind,” the comic and writer told USA Today newspaper of fatherhood last year. “It’s gonna be, I’m sure, very challenging, but I also think it could be really fun.”
The new addition is a welcome distraction for Johansson, who is suing Disney over her hit film. Black Widow was placed on streaming service Disney Plus the same day it hit theatres, which the star alleges breached her contract with the company. According to a complaint submitted by her lawyers, the actress was guaranteed exclusive release in theatres as the bulk of her salary depended on the film’s box office performance.
Disney quickly hit back claiming the lawsuit showed “callous disregard” for the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “There is no merit whatsoever to this filing,” a statement from the company read.
As she looks forward to her maternity leave, the Jojo Rabbit star admits she has seen a big shift in her priorities since she has become a mum. And it’s made her a lot pickier when it comes to choosing roles that will take her away from spending time with her young kids.
“Now I have a child … not that I’m not career-driven now, but I guess I’ve been driven by other sides of my career in the past,” Johansson told Vanity Fair magazine in 2019. “Maybe I was more concerned with a certain kind of visibility or exposure. And now I’m not as worried about that stuff. I’m in a good phase in my career where I’m able to actually wait for stuff that’s right.”
