FROM CHAOS to CLEAN
Easy hacks to leave your house sparkling in no time
If the thought of deep-cleaning your house fills you with dread, you aren’t alone. It’s something many of us choose to put off, but there is another way. Cleaning guru Shannon Lush suggests forgoing a deepclean altogether in favour of scrubbing little and often instead.
“A deep-clean becomes a massive job that no-one wants to do,” Lush says. “Instead, if you clean a single room per day you’re only ever one room away from a clean house, and you avoid that build-up issue.”
That build-up problem she’s referring to? The skin cells we shed and the dust and grime it creates in our living environment. “I don’t like living in people soup,” says Lush. We’re sure you can relate, so here are her three tips for calm cleaning …
CLUTTER BUCKET
Introduce a clutter bucket into your routine. This is an empty bucket that you use to collect pesky items that accumulate around the house.
“Before you start cleaning, take your clutter bucket and anything that doesn’t
belong in that room goes into it,” says Lush. This way you’ll have a clean slate and can focus simply on cleaning the space, rather than tidying as well.
TOP TO BOTTOM
Cleaning from top to bottom means dust and debris will fall down and save you cleaning the floor twice, plus it ensures nothing is missed.
“Start from the top and work your way down,” Lush says. “Sweep down the walls with a soft kitchen broom covered with clean pantyhose. If you’re cleaning the kitchen or bathroom, combine one teaspoon of lavender oil with one litre of water, and spray the pantyhose with this solution. This antibacterial solution will cut through all the muck.”
KEEP TRACK OF TIME
Hold yourself accountable to efficient cleaning by finding a song or making a playlist adding up to the amount of time you want to spend cleaning that room. For bathrooms, Lush suggests Tchaikovsky’s classic ‘1812 Overture’.
