Screenplay co-writer Karen McCullah has shared that while writing the script, they referred to loveable lawyer Emmett as “the Luke Wilson character”. Other actors were considered, including British star Paul Bettany, but Wilson, 49, who had recently appeared in Charlie’s Angels, got the gig. Wilson went on to have a successful movie career, starring in hits like Old School and Death at a Funeral, and bringing his laidback charm to TV roles in That ’70s Show and Stargirl.
