EMMYS : ALL THE GLAMOUR
WHO TAKES YOU INSIDE THE EMMY AWARDS
With no masks in sight, Rogen was the first to acknowledge the elephant in the room. “Let me start by saying there is way too many of us in this little room,” he mused. “I went from wiping my groceries to having Paul Bettany sneeze in my face.”
Lovers of the red carpet have been on a high in recent weeks, with in-person events returning with a bang. And the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards certainly didn’t disappoint, providing all the glitz and glamour in Los Angeles on September 20. Just like when colour TV was first introduced in 1954, our screens were lit up with all the hues of the rainbow as stars made their way onto the red carpet – with bold and bright seemingly the theme of the night. Despite missing out on a Best Actress Award for her lead role in The Queen’s Gambit, Anya Taylor-Joy
took home best-dressed in our eyes with a stunning Dior Haute Couture gown and cape, which the actress helped design herself. “I am beyond proud to see a design of mine brought so beautifully to life by the exquisite craftsmanship of the house,” she shared on Instagram of her Emmys look.
While Sarah Paulson and Mandy Moore both stunned in red, The Flight Attendant’s Kaley Cuoco opted for a shock neon yellow gown. And even the boys had some fun with colour, with Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy going bold in bright blue and Seth Rogen choosing a more subdued but equally dashing burnt orange.
Off the red carpet, the actual ceremony seemed to be all about Ted Lasso and The Crown – with awards often ping-ponging between the two shows. “If you want an Emmy, get yourself booked on Ted Lasso or The Crown,” Dr Phil joked during his sketch.
Jason Sudeikis was recognised for his role as the titular Ted, taking out Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The Apple TV Plus series, which Sudeikis created and co-writes, also won Best Comedy, while stars Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham grabbed Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series for their roles in the show. “Winning is fun, but if you find a family along the way, you can’t lose,” Sudeikis tweeted of his cast and crew.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s The Crown managed an impressive 11 wins from 24 nominations. Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor and Tobias Menzies were all recognised for their on-screen work, celebrating in their very own Emmys ceremony in London due to filming commitments. And while the show took out the Best Drama Series Award, it was Gillian Anderson’s Best Supporting Actress win for her part as Margaret Thatcher that stole the night – ending her drought after winning her first, and only other, Emmy Award 24 years ago for her X-Files role.
