AMY’S HEALTH BATTLE
THE STAR REVEALS SHE’S UNDERGONE MAJOR SURGERY TO HELP STOP HER SUFFERING FROM ENDOMETRIOSIS
Amy Schumer is finally on the mend after years of pain and trauma from endometriosis. The actress shared a health update with fans via Instagram on September 18, revealing that she had recently undergone surgery to have her uterus and appendix removed due to her debilitating diagnosis years previously. “If you have really painful periods you may have #endometriosis,” the 40-year-old shared alongside a snap of herself in a medical gown.
In the next slide, Schumer opened up about the procedure in a video filmed by husband Chris Fischer from her hospital bed. “So, it’s the morning after my surgery for endometriosis and my uterus is out,” she explained. “The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis that he removed. He removed my appendix because the endometriosis had attacked it.”
In her usual candid style, the star then went into detail about her recovery – admitting, while sore, she was healing well. “There was a lot, a lot of blood in my uterus and I’m, you know, sore and I have some, like, gas pains,” she added. “But, other than that, I already feel that my energy is [returning] …”
It’s not the first time Schumer has opened up about her battle with endometriosis, previously revealing her 2-year-old son Gene’s birth was “really scary” as a result of the painful condition. “I was throwing up through the first hour of my C-section,” she explained during a moving episode of the Informed Pregnancy and Parenting podcast in December 2019. “It’s supposed to take about an hour and a half. Mine took over three hours because of my endometriosis.”
The following month, the Inside Amy Schumer star revealed she and her hubby had started the process of IVF to help them have a second child. “I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional,” she captioned a post at the time. “We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling.”
Although Schumer’s recent surgery means she won’t be able to carry her second child, the actress had already come to that decision last August. “We did IVF, and IVF was really tough on me,” she told Sunday Today with Willie Geist. “I don’t think I could ever do IVF again. I decided that I can’t be pregnant ever again.”
While the couple have “thought about a surrogate”, it seems getting Schumer’s endometriosis pain under control has been paramount. And now that she’s on the mend, plans for a second baby might be on the cards once again. “We got these embryos, so I don’t know,” she has previously said. “I’m just kinda, like, walking back like, ‘OK, maybe we’ll revisit that in a minute.’”
