LIANE MORIARTY
THE AUTHOR OPENS UP ABOUT SEEING HER BESTSELLING NOVELS COME TO LIFE ON SCREEN
The TV adaptation of her 2018 novel Nine Perfect Strangers was easily the most highly anticipated drama series this year. And Aussie author Liane Moriarty admits she loves to see her books brought to life.
“It’s a surreal, strange, wonderful and thrilling experience to watch them,” the bestselling author tells WHO. “The TV adaptations haven’t changed the way I write, but they have opened up my work to a whole new audience, which I’m very grateful for.”
While the on-screen reincarnations of Strangers and Big Little Lies, which came out in 2017, haven’t remained 100 per cent faithful to her novels,
Moriarty explains she doesn’t mind just one bit.
“I’m always happy to hand it over and don’t hold on too tight,” she says. “Each actor brings their own experiences and makes the character fresh and surprising, which I love. My Madeline [Reese Witherspoon from Big Little Lies] would never have had an a air but it was perfect she did in the series,” she explains.
In her latest page-turner, Apples Never Fall, Moriarty tells the story of the Delaney family who appear to have it all. Joy and Stan are retired tennis coaches who are meant to be enjoying life now their four kids have grown up. But a
mysterious house guest changes their peaceful existence. Months later, Joy goes missing and the suspicion falls rmly on the shoulders of her husband. Soon, their children are examining their parents’ marriage and family history with fresh, frightened eyes. Could Joy’s disappearance be related to their visitor from last year? Or were things never as rosy as they appeared?
“I’ve recently gotten into true crime podcasts and that made me wonder what it must feel like if your mum went missing and your dad was the suspect,” Moriarty says of her inspiration. (Out now)
