“We straddle that line between making you laugh and breaking your heart,” says Savage of the new show. This time, it’s inspired in part by creator Saladin K Patterson’s childhood experiences. “The thing that makes this re-imagining so vital and the message so important is the stories that are being told,” says star EJ Williams, 12, whose character as an adult is voiced by Don Cheadle. “This show puts such a unique spin on them.” Adds Savage: “We’ll know in 30 years if it can endure like the original, but I think what we’re doing is really something special.”
