“Signs of burnout and stress manifest differentl­y for people, but common signals may be if you find yourself constantly tired, run down and lacking concentrat­ion,” Geldenhuys says. “If you are struggling to cope with competing work and life demands, you’re getting annoyed more quickly with work or colleagues, or wake up in the morning dreading the thought of doing your job and going to work, it’s time to seriously consider your mental health.” The longer we leave it, the more difficult it can be to recuperate. “Recovering from severe burnout will take time and is detrimenta­l to your overall health and wellbeing,” she adds. “It can therefore be useful to take stock of how you are feeling emotionall­y and mentally on a regular basis and to take mental health breaks and practice self-care.”
