NURSES WHO KILL
ALLITT ISN’T THE ONLY NURSE WHO’S ALLEGEDLY HURT PATIENTS
LUCY LETBY
The 31-year-old children’s nurse has been charged with murdering eight babies and attempting to kill 10 others. Her arrest followed a three-year investigation into the deaths at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire, England.
The hospital raised the alarm following the high number of fatalities between March 2015 and July 2016. Two babies died at the hospital in 2013, whereas eight babies died in 2015 in Letby’s care. The premature babies had lapsed into unconsciousness with heart and lung failure, and could not be resuscitated. An internal inquiry found the babies developed unexplained blotches on their arms and legs.
Letby’s trial begins in July 2022.
GENENE JONES
American serial killer nurse Genene Jones presided over a reign of terror from 1977 to 1982. She murdered children with lethal doses of various medications, and is believed to have killed at least 60 infants. She was initially convicted in 1984 for the death of just one patient, as well as being charged with the attempted murder of another. However, 30 years later, Jones was charged with murder a second time in a bid to prevent her from receiving an early release.
The true number of her victims will never be known because many of the relevant hospital records have been destroyed.
DANIELA POGGIALI
Italian nurse Daniela Poggiali was charged with murdering a number of her patients, but she vehemently denied the accusations. Investigators stated that she was present for 96 deaths; shockingly, Poggiali was alleged to have posed for selfies with her deceased patients. The killer nurse also allegedly stole money and jewellery from her victims and was heard bragging to friends that she killed them because she found them “annoying”.
Poggiali was recently acquitted of the charges against her. However, the AttorneyGeneral has announced a potential appeal of the outcome to the Supreme Court.
