THE NEW HOST OF BLOW UP IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

-

As the country’s greatest balloon artists get ready to go head-to-head in Seven’s new TV series Blow Up, which promises to deliver artistry beyond your wildest dreams, it’s hard not to draw comparisons with Nine’s LEGO Masters. But Lucas, who co-hosts the show with Stephen Curry, tells WHO this competition will de nitely blow you away.

How did you end up fronting a series about balloons?

When they asked me to do the show, I was kind of like, “Balloons? What is this?”Then as soon as I saw what they could do, I had to do [it].

Is it ever something you thought would be on your career horizon?

No! But, I really love unique little worlds and passions, like, my mum was a country singer and my dad was a farmer and opal miner, and even me doing comedy. It’s crazy how quickly we were thrust into this world of balloon artistry.

On the show, we see you make a balloon dog with your back to the camera. Did you really do that?

I actually did make it! My mum had two best friends who were actually clowns and they used to travel around with a circus – they taught me how to make a balloon dog. I was taught when I was 6 or 7, and I don’t think I’ve made one for 20-something years. A long time now. But it came back to me. It’s in my blood.

It’s fate that you got this job…

You can’t run from it!

You and Stephen have great chemistry on-screen.

He’s just a great, lovable guy. We clicked immediately. He’s super-positive and it was really good to be around someone like that.

Tell us about your relationship with the contestants. They really re-energised me. Their passion was really infectious. I got so sucked into it that I cried!

Did you have a favourite contestant?

I thought you might ask me that. Of course, but I don’t feel like I can say who it is. But I will say, there were people on the show that at rst I didn’t think were my favourites, but by the end I really loved them.

How did you cope with the sound of balloons squeaking?

You de nitely get used to the squeaking. I would go home after

lming every night and I could still hear it – it would get into my brain! (Blow Up premieres Mon., May 15 at 7.30pm on Channel 7 and 7plus.)
