UNDER ATTACK
THE SUSSEXES SUFFER THE WEEK FROM HELL AFTER A PUBLIC APPEARANCE GONE WRONG
The Duke and Duchess’ claims of a “near catastrophic” car chase involving paparazzi through the streets of New York has been called into question, with insiders, experts and even eyewitnesses calling the couple out. A spokesman for the Sussexes claimed the prince, his wife Meghan, as well as his mother-in-law Doria Ragland, were the victims of a lengthy cat and mouse pursuit after leaving the 2023 Women of Vision Awards on May 16.
“This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers,” the emotive statement from their representative read. “While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety.”
The news had many around the world likening it to the horrifying incident that killed Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, back in 1997. However, New York police officials played down the event, saying that they didn’t believe that the case was “near catastrophic”. New York Mayor, Eric Adams, described the actions of the paparazzi as “reckless” and “irresponsible”, but also added that he would find it “hard to believe” there was a “two-hour high-speed chase”. Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg wasn’t buying it while discussing the incident on talk show, The View. “It just doesn’t work in New York,” she said of the claims.
The whole saga cast a shadow on the night’s actual event, with Meghan having received the Women of Vision Award for her global advocacy to empower women just hours earlier. It will also likely see the pair go to ground at their Montecito mansion once again, as they shelter from the media storm surrounding them.
