She recently revealed he stole her heart by writing her love letters during the early days of their relationship. Now, romantic Today newsreader Peter Stefanovic has struck again, this time dropping to one knee in the stunning vineyards of Saint-emilion in the South of France, asking the woman of his dreams, Sylvia Jeffreys, to be his wife. “I was so surprised,” says Sylvia, adding it took her a mere millisecond to give her answer. “I said, ‘ Yes!’ Because of course I want to marry him!” Sylvia couldn’t contain her excitement as she recalled the “beautiful” moment in a live interview with her Today family, including her soon-to-be brotherin-law Karl Stefanovic and co-host Lisa Wilkinson.

“He’s very romantic and he was true to that,” said the 30-year-old, who met Pete two years ago when he stepped in to replace his big brother Karl in the Christmas break after returning from his post as a European correspondent.

“After a day in Saint-emilion we ended up in some vineyards and he tricked me into taking some photographs. I turned around and there he was on one

knee doing all the right things and he pops the question with a big grin on his face.”

Mission complete

It seems all the tactical skills Pete, 34, picked up in his time as a foreign correspondent came in handy when it came to concealing the diamond sparkler he’d been holding on to for months.

“The poor thing! He separated himself from me when we were going through the security scans at the airports because he was scared they’d make him pull it out of his backpack,” laughs Sylvia.

“So he made sure there was a big distance between us so I wouldn’t see anything. Then he made the excuse of needing to go to the gentlemen’s room while I waited outside.

“It It was very sm smooth. I had absolutely no idea!id He caught me completely offff off guard so it was a beautiful surprise.”

If Pete’s recent Instagram post is anything to go by, he’s also overjoyed to call Sylvia his fiancee.

“Asked my missus to be my wife and she said yes,” he captioned a snap of the pair, who kept their happy news a secret for two weeks before sharing it with the world.

“We didn’t tell anyone because we wanted to enjoy the moment ourselves and give the beautiful surprise to everyone down the track,” says Sylvia, adding that they’ve been busy celebrating with their friends in Europe.

Warm welcome

“My family’s thrilled, they adore Pete,” says Sylvia, who, like Pete, hails from Queensland.

“My mum loved him the moment she met him, so they’re all over the moon. My sister will be my maid of honour so she’s already wedding planning.”

Meanwhile, Karl couldn’t be happier for the newly engaged couple. “My baby bro finally put a ring on it. Welcome to the Stefanovic clan,” he told his soon-to-be sister-in-law before making a cheeky remark.

“She could have done a whole lot better!” he quipped.

Since they announced their engagement, Sylvia says they’ve been inundated with well-wishes. “It’s so special and so lovely to have so many messages and warm wishes from people who we are very close to and people we’ve never met before – and that’s really such a special part of it.”

‘It was very smooth. I had absolutely no idea!’
