He’s now a Hollywood heartthrob, but even as a boy Ryan Gosling had a way with the ladies. The La La Land star was so confident when it came to playing the dating game, the first girl he asked out was almost twice his age!
Chantal Francis – Ryan’s very first crush – says the young star was incredibly charming when he turned up at her mother’s coffee shop in Cornwall, Canada, and asked her on a date. The 11year-old aspiring actor was a student at nearby Gladstone Public School at the time.
“He was a very flirtatious boy,” Chantal, now 40, tells Woman’s Day. “I was at the coffee shop one time and he asked me out.
“He was little, so I told him he was tooto young, but to come and knockknoc on my door when he turne turned 18.”
The cute encounter was just a year before Ryan, now 36, scored a role on The All New Mickey Mouse Club – a move that launched his showbiz career.
Chantal went on to marry and have two sons. She still lives in Cornwall, and recalls the young Romeo fondly. “He was funny, charming and charismatic,” she says. “He was just starting out, doing a little runway modelling and things like that.”
Chantal’s mum Carole Lafrance recalls, “He said I made the best caesar salads in the world and he’d bring his mum to have lunch on a date with him. I mean, what boy eats caesar salad?
“He was very polite,” she adds. “I could tell even then he was going to go far.”
