Cathy Freeman’s ’ family joy.

The sprint sensation is loving life as a mum

-

Since swapping her sports bag for a nappy bag, Cathy Freeman is rarely seen in public. But if these heartwarming photos of the retired Olympian spending time with friends at a Melbourne park are anything to go by, she’s as happy now as she was sprinting to victory for Australia in the 2000 Olympic Games.

Contented Cathy, who married stockbroker James Murch in 2009, is loving life as mum to five-year-old daughter Ruby. Her adoration of the little girl she calls “Rubester” was clear to see as the pair laughed and admired Ruby’s latest colouring efforts, before hitting the monkey bars. However the 44-year-old sporting legend says the transition to parenting has been no walk in the park.

“There is no comparison – motherhood is amazing but, hands down, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,’’ says Cathy, who is now focused on supporting Indigenous children through the Cathy Freeman Foundation.

“It’s way harder [than the Olympics], hand on heart. I don’t understand why it isn’t written in books. Not even my mother warned me.” But by the looks of these pics, Cathy’s doing a stellar job!
