‘When you see even one juvenile make good, it’s been worth it’

-

This year’s Queensland Barnardos Mother of the Year Sharon Macrae took a brave leap of faith nine years ago when she decided she wanted to become a police officer.

After a tough upbringing shaped by abuse and adversity – something she says has inspired her to protect her own family – her dream became a reality when she was accepted into the force.

Two years into her training, and as she balanced work, study and supporting her family, Amanda lost her beloved husband of 26 years to cancer.

“It rocked our world – he was in the military and a wonderful man – I was suddenly on my own,” says Sharon, choking back tears. “It was sink or swim – but I’ve always prided myself on getting back in the saddle, which is exactly what I did.”

The devoted mum, 54, has raised the couple’s four kids, Kimberley, 29, Amanda, 26, Scott, 21 and Lachlan, 19, and also has three gorgeous grandchildren.

In her role as a police officer, Sharon also helps get juvenile offenders back on track, and assists refugees settle into their new lives. “When you see at least one juvenile make good, it’s been worth it. Refugees are so grateful – they are a joy to work with.”

Amanda and her siblings couldn’t be more proud of their mum. “She’s like the Eveready bunny – she honestly never stops!”
