Peter Falconio murder

-

Peter Falconio and his girlfriend Joanne Lees were in high spirits as they drove through the night along the Stuart Highway between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek in the NT in July 2001.

It was the perfect holiday for the British tourists.

Sadly, that changed after they were stopped by Bradley Murdoch who flagged them down claiming they had something wrong with their engine. Peter went to the back of the vehicle to look, and that was the last Joanne saw of him. She heard a shot, then a leering Murdoch pointed a gun at her, tied her wrists and threw her into his ute.

A terrified Joanne managed to escape when Murdoch went to dispose of Peter’s body. She hid in the bush for five hours while Murdoch scoured the area with a torch. Eventually, Joanne managed to flag down a truck, and although she was safe, her boyfriend’s body has never been found.

This story, like the Azaria Chamberlain case, captivated the world. Murdoch was caught and convicted of Peter’s murderer in 2005. He is currently serving life in prison.

The case was so horrendous it inspired the cult horror movie, , Wolf Creek.
