We’re empty-nesters!

She recently touched Today viewers’ hearts as she became emotional on air after being asked about hohow her children see her as a mmother. It came after watching yoyoung kids give their unedited viviewsiews on their mums to celebrate Mother’s Day and, says Lisa of her teary eyed reaction, “I was just really struck by what that would feel like.”

It especially hits home now for Lisa and Peter, who will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in September, because Jake, Louis and Billi have all left the nest to go to university.

Describing herself as “hopelessly sentimental”, Lisa reveals she has usedu the opportunity to have a bit ofo a clean-out at home.

“I’ve found all the old Mother’s Day cards and notes Pete and I have leftl for each other over the years,” shes reveals. “Just these beautiful littlel mementoes that a lot of peoplep might have thrown out.”

Setting aside a drawer for each childc and their “precious things”, it’si proven a delight to sit down withw the kids and revisit those happyh memories.

“Trying to get the five of us all togethert is not easy at the moment because they’ve got so much going on in their lives,” she says. “But the importance of family is in their DNA and how they fit into the universe.

With Peter recently giving up alcohol in order to improve his relationships – not just with his wife and kids but with all those around him – the pair may be on their own but, according to Lisa, they’re happier than ever.

“On one of our first dates, Pete said to me, ‘If this works out, you know the Fitzsimonses don’t divorce.’ And I said to him, ‘You know what? Wilkinsons don’t either. So if we put a ring on it, we’re stuck with each other!’”

“We’ve always had a really strong marriage. We still make each other laugh, we still get excited for each other about the work we do, we have very similar ideas about parenting and what we hope for our kids. It’s just a really natural fit for us,” she says.
