The nervous bride had a last minute meltdown before tying the knot

-

It was the event royal watchers had been counting down to for months, but Pippa Middleton’s royalty-studded wedding to millionaire James Matthews at the weekend almost didn’t happen!

A day or two out from the biggest moment of her life, the bride-to-be was buckling under the weight of expectation – and fearing she’d be outshone by an unexpected contender. Sources say Pippa was suffering from last-minute jitters largely because she feared she’d be upstaged at her own celebration by none other than her cute-as-a-button niece, Princess Charlotte.

The two-year-old and her brother Prince George, three, are arguably the world’s favourite royals. And while Pippa was also said to be nervous about sharing the limelight with Prince Harry’s stunning actress girlfriend Meghan Markle – to whom she reluctantly extended a last-minute invitation – it was bridesmaid Charlotte who really had her worried. “Everyone’s joking that Meghan won’t be outshining anyone – it’s Charlotte she has to watch out for,” an insider told Woman’s Day just hours ahead of Pippa’s wedding. “She’ll be the bridesmaid and everyone will be looking at her – giving Pippa a taste of her own medicine. And Charlotte’s so excited!”

Indeed, Pippa’s fears were somewhat ironic, given she stole the show at her sister Duchess Kate’s 2011 wedding to Prince William. Pictures of the maid of honour’s shapely behind went viral, earning her the nickname “Her Royal Hotness”. With Charlotte’s popularity skyrocketing – her net worth is estimated at $5.2 billion, compared to George’s $4.1 billion – Pippa’s concerns were not unfounded!

The 33-year-old is also known to be fairly reserved, and was acutely aware of the intense scrutiny she’d be under to look even more elegant than she did at Kate’s wedding.

Pippa wasn’t the only one worried about Charlotte’s big role at the society wedding of the year – her mum Kate, 35, admitted last week to a party guest at Buckingham Palace that she was concerned about how the little princess and George would cope.

“She said they were all really looking forward to her sister’s wedding but she was a bit worried about how her children might behave. She said she was hopeful they’d be good but you never know at that age!” Andrew Bates said.

Charlotte and Meghan weren’t the only cause for Pippa’s anxiety. As Woman’s Day reported last week, she was hesitant to sign a pre-nup, and she and James were at loggerheads over the documents right up until the last minute.
