It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 11 years since Australia’s number one wildlife hero, Steve Irwin, tragically lost his life. And the nation’s loss hasn’t become any easier for his widowed wife Terri, as she continues to look for ways to feel close to her late husband, who she says will always be the love of her life.
Woman’s Day can reveal the mum-of-two – who continues Steve’s legacy by managing their family-run zoo on the Sunshine Coast – invited close family friend and renowned psychic medium John Edward to her home last week in a bid to contact Steve.
“John was only in Australia for 10 days to promote his upcoming tour, but during that time he made sure he flew up to Queensland to visit Terri,” says our source. “John has been a friend of the Irwins for some time.”
This isn’t the first time John – who was also close to the Crocodile Hunter before his death in 2006 – has helped Terri come to terms with Steve’s passing.
In 2008, just two years after Steve tragically lost his life after being pierced in the chest by a stingray barb, Terri and Steve’s dad Bob had a private
session with the psychic – and John said the pair were comforted by the outcome.
“There’s no doubt that Steve was with us,” John said following their session. “It’s not black and white, it’s grey, but there’s a definite Steve energy that is unmistakable.”
A year later, Terri admitted she can “feel” and “sense” Steve around her, and revealed her Christian upbringing means she has “great faith that once a person dies their spirit is still around”.
“I know [Steve’s] gone but in some way he’s still here. I feel him, I sense him,” she said. “And I think that’s very nice and comforting.”
Terri’s invitation comes at a particularly poignant time, just weeks after she and Steve would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
The conservationist uploaded a heartwarming picture of the pair on Twitter to mark the occasion.
“Today would have been our 25th wedding anniversary. I miss you so very much, and I’m grateful every day for the time we had together,” she captioned the shot.
It’s little wonder Terri, 52, has turned to 47-year-old John – who attended the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner in LA in May with his family – for answers as she reflects on how far the family has come since Steve’s passing.
While 18-year-old daughter Bindi is happily loved-up with her boyfriend of three years Chandler Powell, son Robert, 13, already has a thriving TV and photography care career. While he’d no doubt be incre incredibly proudd off hi his kid kids, it’sit’ likelyli Steve would be devastated to learn that his dad is no longer on speaking terms with his wife and children, after he decided to part ways with Australia Zoo in 2008.
Bob Senior claimed he’d been told he was becoming a “disruptive influence” in the family, and just last year Bindi revealed her estranged grandfather had even rejected the birthday presents they’d tried to gift him.
Terri, meanwhile, has been romantically linked to actor Russell Crowe, among others, but continues to insist she hasn’t dated anyone since Steve’s death – and fans are wondering if she’d like his blessing to finally move on.
“I feel a connection still with Steve,” Terri has said. “You know when you take those vows, and say, ‘We’ll be together as long as we both shall live,’ I really don’t think I would’ve married if I hadn’t met Steve. And he’s very special to me and continues to be.”
