Jason’s cancer shock: I had months to live!

-

J ason had a seizure in the waiting room when doctors told him the devastating news he had a tumour and he may not have long to live.

“I couldn’t believe it when the doctors told me I had three to six months to live,” says the 46-year-old father-of-three, who was just 23 when the diagnosis was given.

Thankfully, the prognosis was wrong, but the experience was traumatic. “It was a benign tumour but initially doctors thought it was cancer and it had spread,” says Jason. “When they operated they realised it was all OK.”

It’s not the only traumatic life event the plumber and his partner Sarah, a palliative care nurse, have had to weather in their 25-year relationship.

Seven years ago they faced crippling financial difficulties, which saw Jason’s plumbing business go under. “We were owed a lot of money and it put me in a bad situation.

“As a plumber I was able to get another job and I had to – you can’t fall in a hole when you’ve got children. They can’t see you fall over. It was extremely hard work, and we could have really fallen apart, but with Sarah’s strength we clawed our way back.”
