Get serious

“A lot of ppeople who decide they want to lolose weight but aren’t really familiar wwith gym equipment might just go to the gym and do what other people arare doing,” says Kate Allott, national fifitness manager at Anytime Fitness Auaustralia. “If you’re serious about loslosing weight, it’s worth talkingtalkin to a personal trainer or fitnessfitn expert to make sure you’reyo getting the right balanceba of cardio and weight trainingtrai to burn calories, even while you’re at rest.”

Slow down

Believe it or not, it’s a fact that too much exercise can actually be bad for you! “People who are trying to lose weight often overtrain, which sends their body into super-fatigue mode, where it produces too much cortisol and starts to shut down,” Kate points out. “You need to get the right balance between training and resting the body so when you’re training your body is in the optimal zone for burning calories and building muscle.”

Don’t starve yourself

Weight loss is 20 per cent about exercise and 80 per cent about nutrition. “Make sure you’re eating the right amount of the right whole, fresh foods to fuel your body for training. If you’re not eating enough, your body will go into starvation mode, which slows down your metabolism, hindering weight loss.”

Mix it up

“I always encourage clients to vary their exercise routine. If you keep your body guessing, you’ll reduce the risk of your weight plateauing. Allow the body to recover between heavy weight training sessions by walking, stretching or doing yoga – it’s vital if you want to see results.”
