Woman’s Day (Australia)

Friendly locals

Ththe stopst you’ll make on an Alaskan cruise are all small ports – the MS Eurodam, for example, drops anchor at Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan. Despite its Lilliputian size, Juneau is actually the capital of Alaska – and along with Sitka and Ketchikan, they all once thrived on salmon fishing and timber milling. Those industries are less prevalent now, which means tourism has had to pick up the slack. That equals locals who are more than happy to pour you a beer, sell you a delicious elk burger or show you the sights with that trademark Alaskan good humour. “Standoffish” just isn’t in their vocabulary.
