LIVE THE IKIGAI LIFE

Introducing the new Japanese way to wellness that will make you happy

-

Want to live a longer life with less stress and greater happiness? Then you need to embrace the Japanese philosophy of ikigai. The word literally breaks down to iki (to live) and gai (reason) – a reason to live.

Neuroscientist and author Ken Mogi says embedding this understanding into every aspect of life has helped Japanese women to rank second in the world in longevity, and the men fourth.

“Those who discover ikigai have everything they need for a long and happy journey through life,” says Ken. Follow his expert tips to find your ikigai.

Get up early

Assuming you’ve had enough sleep, your brain is in its optimal state in the morning, perfect for creativity. In Japan, it’s customary to eat something sweet like chocolate with green tea or coffee first thing. This releases dopamine, which promotes feelings of pleasure.

Start small

List five small things that make you happy, such as giving your loved ones a hug, walking the dog or reading the paper. Slow down and enjoy things you usually rush through and barely notice.

Take pride

Embrace kodawari, which means taking extraordinary care of very small details. Starting small and taking great pride in every task will increase quality of work and personal fulfilment.

Be mindful

To find joy in everything you do, even housework, completely immerse yourself in it. Get so involved that neither the past nor the present matter. You’ll find yourself happier and more creative.

Find a hobby

Ikigai promotes work-life balance by finding an interest outside your job, like gardening or painting. Joy in things that don’t involve financial reward or worldly success gives a feeling of personal achievement and keeps your life in perspective.
