Cate Blanchett and her husband lead separate lives

Friends fear for the actress and her playwright l ih husband’s marriage as the pair appear to be living very separate lives

-

Just months out from their 20th wedding anniversary, Cate Blanchett’s marriage to Andrew Upton appears to be in grave danger.

The couple, who wed in December 1997, have barely been spotted together in the past year, with friends fearing they’ve grown apart, despite sharing four children, Dashiell, 15, Roman, 13, Ignatius, nine and two-year-old Edith.

“They’ve been leading almost separate lives,” a friend of Cate’s tells Woman’s Day exclusively. “Cate does her thing and Andrew does his. They’re like ships that pass in the night,” reveals the friend, adding when they’re sleeping together under the same roof, they don’t seem to spend a lot of quality time together. “They just seem busy in their own worlds.”

The Aussie actress, who recently walked the red carpet alone in LA for her new film Thor: Ragnarok, was seen having dinner with her husband at Nobu in LA in August but the pair haven’t been photographed together since March, when they appeared distant in New York soon after they sold their home in Sydney’s Hunters Hill.

“They just seem busy in their own separate worlds,” Cate’s friend explains. And when the actress is out with friends, those close to Cate say she rarely mentions Andrew.

“It’s almost like he doesn’t exist anymore. She’ll chat away about her kids and her work, and gossip about what’s going on in the movie world. But you have to ask her how Andrew is, and then she just says ‘fine’ and moves on to another subject.”

According to Cate’s friend, those occasions where Cate, 48, does get talking about her husband, she doesn’t seem enthusiastic about the state of their marriage.

“It’s a shame because they used to be such a great couple – so happy together. But now it seems like they’ve drifted apart and grown bored with each other,” the friend says.

It’s not the first time Cate’s marriage has been questioned. Last year, Andrew, 51, and Love Child actress Harriet Dyer, 28, were spotted looking very cosy in a Sydney bar.

Despite Andrew’s insistence the pair are simply friends, those close to Cate say she found the situation difficult to handle.

“She’s very proud, but seeing Andrew and Harriet sprawled over each other was almost too much for her to take,” another source reveals.

Now, friends fear Cate’s doing everything she can to take her mind off her relationship.

“I think with her busy career and her family, she doesn’t have too much time to dwell on things, but I’ve no doubt she misses being romanced.”

But the Aussie beauty isn’t one to give up easily on anything. “It’s not her style to leave Andrew and move on with someone else,” the friend says.

“She really wouldn’t want to tear her family apart.

“But at the back of her mind, Cate must be wondering what on earth Andrew is thinking, and contemplating their future together – how long can they go on like this?”
