Mastering MINDFUL DRINKING

Learn to sip less and enjoy it more

-

Forget the hangover – more and more Aussies are focusing on the concept of mindful drinking. Nutritionist and Ocsober ambassador Zoe Bingley-pullin says it’s all about being aware of the emotional and physical impacts of alcohol, and being present in the moment.

STAY HYDRATED

Order a mineral water between alcoholic drinks to hydrate. Slowing the rate at which you consume alcohol will keep you more in control of your drinking. Let go of any pressure to keep up with peers and do what feels best for you.

EATING ISN’T CHEATING

Always eat when drinking, especially a protein-rich snack. Drinking on an empty stomach can destabilise blood-sugar levels and cause dips in energy, which can lead to seeking out further alcohol as a pick-me-up. Eating will also slow the release of alcohol into the blood stream, therefore lessening its impact.

CHANGE YOUR MINDSET

Don’t make every social event about alcohol – find enjoyment in socialising outside of drinking. But avoid placing restrictions on yourself, as they will only lead to feelings of deprivation, which can trigger binge drinking.

FIND ALTERNATIVES

Avoid alcohol if you’re stressed, tired or emotional. Using alcohol to relax can result in dependence when the same feelings surface. Try a brisk walk, talking to friends or meditating instead.

LEARN TO SAY “NO”

Stop drinking when you’ve had enough and be OK with saying, “No, thank you.” Let go of any guilt from feeling as though you are letting others down by not drinking. Most importantly, be confident to put your own needs first.

SUPPORT A CAUSE

Get involved with a cause like Ocsober or Dry July to help build new habits, not only around socialising but also how you choose to relax. Show yourself alcohol isn’t a necessary part of your life and can be enjoyed in moderation.
