MARIAN KEYES ‘I’M HONEST ABOUT MY FLAWS’

-

Best-selling Irish author Marian Keyes is no stranger to addressing issues of controversy in her books, and her latest novel The Break is no different!

The Break is about a woman whose husband wants to take a pause in their marriage. How would you fare if that were you?

It comes down to the person, the relationship or the phase of life they’re in. I’m extremely jealous so if my husband, Tony, even looked admiringly at someone else I’d be fuming!

The book also addresses serious issues such as domestic violence. Do you believe it’s important to raise awareness through your work?

I’m a feminist and I write for women, so it’s important to write about these issues. Anything that should be talked about, I will write about. It’s my duty to tell women stories in a way that normalises these issues and to start a conversation.

You’re a global success – why do you think your books are so popular?

I try to be honest about all my flaws, which I have so many of! People read my books and think “it’s not just me”.

Have you achieved everything you’d hoped for in your career?

Above and beyond my wildest dreams! I don’t think I’ve missed out on anything. I feel like I’ve been showered in good luck and good fortune!

THE BREAK by Marian Keyes (Penguin Random House, $32.99) is out now.
