The new series centres on a CubanAmerican family living in LA, led by mum Penelope Alvarez (Justina Machado) as she tries to navigate her newly single status and raise her two kids – radical teen daughter Elena (Isabella Gomez) and socially awkward son Alex (Marcel Ruiz) – with the help of her traditional Cuban-born mum (Rita Moreno).
