Eating insects (Entomophagy)
WHAT IS IT?
More and more people are taking a page out of bug-lover Angelina Jolie’s menu and snacking on crawly critters! “Edible insects should be part of a balanced diet,” says entomologist and food scientist Skye Blackburn, founder of Sydney’s Edible Bug Shop, who adds that crickets are a fave.
“Crickets come in powdered form, so there are no eyes and antennae, and can be added in lots of different foods that you cook at home already. It has a very mild nutty taste and absorbs the flavours around it. One to two tablespoons a day is all you need to make a difference.”
THE BENEFITS
“[Crickets] have more calcium than milk, more potassium than bananas and more bioavailable iron than spinach,” Skye claims. “They also have a full amino acid profile, are low in saturated fats and have three times the amount of omega-3 as salmon. Crickets are high in B2 and B12 vitamins, which are great mood stabilisers.”
