When did you learn to yodel?
I didn’t learn it, I could just do it! When I was six, I listened to country music greats like Tex Morton and Smoky Dawson. I said to my sister Rita, “I can do that.” I just liked the sound of it, so I sat up in a mango tree and practised.
If you weren’t singing, what would you do?
I would’ve quite liked to have had more children, but I didn’t because we got married late. I had Melinda at 38. I worked
What made you release your latest album at 85?
I started it quite a few years ago, then I lost Rita and three other members of my family. I got pretty depressed and shelved it. Then last year, I picked myself up and thought, “Nope, I have to finish this record.” I’m so glad I did.
Any plans for retirement?
Retiring is not in my books. I don’t like the word because it means you are waiting to leave, and I don’t like that. My idea is to have goals – that’s what keeps you young!
