Kate & Leo Together

Their titanic offer saves a mum’s life

-

Fans have been gunning for Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio to get together ever since their tear-jerking turn as Rose and Jack in Titanic more than 20 years ago.

And after the friends reunited to save the life of a young mum, it appears the dream couple are closer than ever. Kate had read about the plight of pregnant British woman Gemma Nuttall, 29, who was diagnosed with aggressive ovarian cancer after her first prenatal scan. She declined life-saving treatment because it would have killed her unborn daughter.

But after delivering a healthy baby girl, Gemma’s joy was short-lived – she was told the cancer had spread to her brain and lungs and she was given six months to live.

Kate, 42, stumbled across Gemma’s fundraising page – set up to help her seek a new treatment that would cost $532,000 – while researching options for her own mother, who died in 2017.

“I thought, this poor woman, who is probably years away from being able to access that kind of treatment,” Kate says of joining in the fundraising. “We reached £200,000 [$354,000] – so at that point it was time to call my friend Leo, to ask if we could do a charity dinner… He said, ‘We can do one better,’ and asked me to come to St Tropez so we could auction off some ‘Jack and Rose’ date nights.”

It was working together on a cause that saw Kate and Leo, 43, bond in a whole new way.

“Kate’s always seen Leo as just a buddy because he’s such a party boy and womaniser,” says our source. “But the way he was so determined to help a stranger gave Kate butterflies.” Since her treatment, Gemma has been given the all-clear. When Kate called Leo to tell him, our source says they both got “extremely emotional”.

‘The way Leo helped really showed his sensitive side’
