Woman’s Day (Australia)

Behind The Scenes

-

Having bid farewell to Love Child, Mandy is setting off on a new TV adventure in the six-part ABC comedy Squinters, which stars some of Australia’s best talents, including Jacki Weaver, Tim Minchin and Damon Herriman. Mandy, 47, tells Woman’s Day this may be her toughest gig yet.

In Squinters you play Bridget, a single mum ferrying her two girls to school and nursery. How did you enjoy the role?

As it turns out, it was very challenging! We were sitting for two days in a car and talking nonstop – luckily I had some good company. I guess it’s what it’s like if you have a driving job. We did need to step out of the car a few times and jump up and down to get ourselves back in the zone.

You may not be a mum yourself, but we hear you’re a proud aunt…

I’ll never forget the privilege of being at Betty’s birth. I’ve been very lucky to be part of her upbringing. And it’s important, we are important. Betty (seven, whose mother is Mandy’s sister, and fellow actress, Hayley) knows I don’t have children and she’s terrified of me having any because maybe I’ll have less energy for her!

We first fell in love with you when you played Rhonda in the AAMI ads. Any idea what she and Ketut are up to these days?

I don’t know! I felt like there was a marriage coming on. Maybe they’ve started a resort or something in Bali. Or maybe that’s what my fantasy is.

Speaking of weddings… any news on your impending nuptials to fiance Carlo?

Yes! We’re well underway and it’s all happening very soon. SQUINTERS Wednesday, 9pm, ABC
