Eat your way to healthier gums!

Holistic dentist DR LEWIS EHRLICH reveals the food we should and shouldn’t be consuming

- Dr Lewis Ehrlich

Stock up on salmon

Fish such as salmon and mackerel are high in omega-3s fatty acids, which have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body. Consuming this fish regularly will help you keep your gums healthy. Remember, wild salmon is better than farmed.

Ditch anything processed

Soft drinks contain simple, pro-inflammatory sugars that increase your overall daily carbohydrate intake. High carbohydrate intake via refined sugars has been shown to create inflammation in the gums. Fried foods, which are high in omega-6 fatty acids, also create inflammation.

Feed on fruit

Blueberries are high in antioxidants, which go a long way to eradicate free radicals in the gum tissue, which keeps them in good shape. Also, oranges are high in vitamin C, which strengthens the collagen within your gums. They also keep your immune system strong, which reduces your risk of infections in the mouth.
