IT'S OUT WITH THE OLD!
Our new columnist KERRI-ANNE KENNERLEY shares her secrets to a wonderful life with Woman’s Day
Iadmit it! I’m a selfconfessed hoarder – I’ve still got jeans and outfits I bought in New York in the ’ 70s! – and I’ve been through a decluttering phase.
There was no intervention, but I had the urge to clear out and clean out. It started after my husband John’s accident with bathroom cabinets, then kitchen cabinets, living room and bedroom ornaments and then finally just stuff.
I just needed to tidy up my environment when all else was spinning out of control.
My mind can cope better without lots of clutter wherever I look, and the change was refreshing. I decided not to buy anything new unless I really needed it, and instead recycled and moved things about in order to declutter.
I’m still figuring out what serves a purpose and suits a room. We had to install a lift before John came home, which meant demolition and the rebuilding of walls. We also had to repaint, and that provided an opportunity for change.
I painted the walls white and got rid of items that didn’t evoke the very best memories. Maybe it was a bit feng shui? Who knows – but I’m now in control.
