Healthy eating ...on a budget!

FROZEN VEGIES & BERRIES Fresh vegetables and berries can be expensive, especially out of season. Frozen foods are available all year round and are still healthy. INVEST IN A LARGE FREEZER Buy foods in bulk when on sale and then freeze what you won’t use. It also feels great to know you have things on hand for any emergencies without having to dash out to the shops. TRY CHEAPER CUTS OF MEAT Instead of buying boneless, skinless chicken breasts, choose chicken legs or thighs. Put a budget-friendly pork shoulder or roasting beef in the oven or slow cooker to feed the whole family with leftovers to spare. It’s usually a better deal to buy a whole chicken and cut it into pieces yourself. You can make chicken broth with the carcass afterwards. GROW YOUR OWN Herbs are easy to grow, and some vegetables need very little care – and a surprising number can be grown in pots. If you want your kids to eat vegies, get them involved in planting, watering and harvesting them, and then get them to help in their preparation and cooking.
