I was broke when I won $250,000!

Most of us dream big when it comes to trying our luck. For Gold Coast tip-truck driver Dan Malcolm, the big win he had 10 years ago allowed him to splash out on his dream Harley – and his first house.

“I was a single bloke doing it tough. I’d just gotten a call from my boss to say my next job had been cancelled. He said go find something to do for an hour and I’ll call you back if there’s any more work,” Dan, 45, tells Woman’s Day.

“I walked into the local newsagency and bought the last $5 scratchie on the roll – it turned out to be lucky last!” He thought he’d won $2525,000 00 until the newsagent pointed out there was one more zero.

“Fair dinkum, I walked out of there with this surreal sense my life had changed all of a sudden – and then I called the Harley-davidson dealer!” Dan recalls. “I told him I’d be paying in cash. He said, ‘Geez cash, you must’ve won the Lotto?’ Actually mate, I did!”

Dan’s next stop was the local real estate office, where he slapped down a healthy deposit on his first ever home.

“Suddenly, my life was right back on track and then I met my great love Tracey – that was like winning the lottery all over again!” he says.
